The New Orleans Saints came into the game against the Green Bay Packers with something to prove. Up until that game, the Saints had not been able to win two games back-to-back, giving them a 5-5 record. During week 11, they topped the Kansas City Chiefs 30-20. The Packers were also coming off of a big win and were looking to keep themselves tied atop the NFC North. Another man with a great game was Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Brees was 20 of 26 for 323 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 157.5. The game marks another top performance by Brees as talk starts to crop up about him breaking an incredible record: the single season passing record. The record is currently held by none other than the legendary Dan Marino, who set it in 1984 with 5,084 yards. The New England Patriots are looking at quite a different year from the last few seasons. In a decision that has been multiple weeks in the making, the NFL has handed down suspensions to six players in the league for violating the policy on Anabolic Steroids and Related Substances. Three of the suspended players, Deuce McAllister, Will Smith and Charles Grant, are from the New Orleans Saints. Kevin Williams and Pat Williams from the Minnesota Vikings and Bryan Pittman from the Houston Texans were also suspended. All of the players were given four game suspensions, which means they will all be out for the rest of the regular season. The suspensions were without pay. The players had been trying to appeal the use of the substance for weeks, but the league stuck to its policy.

The substance that was in question had diuretic or water pill tendencies and a chemical that was prohibited. The players claimed they were not informed that that specific supplement was in violation of the policy. The reason that the NFL bans such substances is that they are often used as masking agents for steroids. The NFL also stands by its decision because players were previously cautioned about using supplements because they are not regulated by the government. The NFL has also consistently held the stance that each player is responsible for what goes in his body and will be held accountable if any of the substances are banned.

It is tough to say which team took the biggest blow with the losses. Certainly the Minnesota Vikings are not happy to be losing both their right and left defensive tackles. The Vikings relied on the tackles heavily to stop the opposing run game. The suspension came just after week 13 when the Vikings took a one-game lead in the NFC North. The Vikings will be facing the Detroit Lions, the Arizona Cardinals, the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Giants to end their season. Charles Graham is the Saints defensive end who has started eight games so far this season. In those games, he has tallied 33 tackles, three sacks, one safety and two passes defended. They lost another defensive end in Will Smith, who has started all 12 games for the Saints this season. In that time, he had 46 tackles and three sacks. Deuce McAllister is their running back who has played in 10 games this season and started five. He has tallied 317 yards and four touchdowns on 89 attempts this year. The Saints still have the Falcons, the Chicago bears, the Lions and the Carolina Panthers. Although they have a big loss, the Saints effectively put themselves basically out of playoff contention already.

Losing Monte Kiffin would mean losing the longest tenured defensive coordinator in the NFL. Kiffin was an offensive and defensive star when he played for Nebraska from 1959-1963. From there, he went to play for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1965 as a defensive end in the Canadian Football League. He returned to his alma mater the next year to become a defensive assistant. While he was in that position, Nebraska won the national championships in 1970 and 1971. He was named the defensive coordinator in 1973, a position he stayed in until 1976. He was the defensive coordinator at Arkansas for two years before becoming the assistant head coach in 1979. The next year, he moved to be the head coach at North Carolina State, where he remained through 1982.

Kiffin started his NFL coaching career in 1983 as the linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers. He remained in that position when he moved to the Buffalo Bills for the 1984 and 1985 seasons as well as with the Minnesota Vikings from 1986-1989 and the New York Jets in 1990. He became the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings in 1991 and then moved to the Vikings’ inside linebackers coach from 1992-1994. He moved to being the defensive coordinator for the 1995 season for the New Orleans Saints. He has been the defensive coordinator for the Bucs since 1996. The New York Giants have been virtually unstoppable lately, but wide receiver Steve Smith had woes outside of football to deal with on November 25. The second-year pro was robbed at gunpoint outside of his home early in the morning of November 25. He was being driven home by his chauffer and when he got out of the car a man came up behind him and demanded valuables. The perpetrator got away with cash, jewelry and a cell phone. The man was not found immediately following the incident. Smith was not hurt in the holdup and the league’s security was told about the holdup.

Before coming to the Giants, Smith was a standout at USC. He started in 27 games and played 46 while at USC. During that time, he managed 190 receptions for 3,019 yards and 22 touchdowns. He was drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the 2007 draft as the 51st pick overall. In his first year, he saw playing time in five of the Giants’ regular season game as well as for the four postseason games. The reason he was in so few during the regular season was because he fractured his scapula early in the season followed by a hamstring injury. During the regular season, he had eight receptions for 63 yards. It was his postseason action, however, that started to have fans taking notice of this young player. In the four playoff games, he had 14 receptions for 152 yards. One of those receptions was a 12 yard reception for a first down in the final drive of the Super Bowl Game on a third-and-11 down. The first down set up the touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress that gave the Giants their victory.

He has played in every game so far this season, starting in three of them. In 12 games, he has tallied 43 receptions, 424 yards and one touchdown. His best game so far this year was against the Cleveland Browns on October 13, which was also the only game that the Giants have lost to far this season. In that game, he had nine catches for 94 yards. Another Giants wide receiver, Burress, has gun problems of his own, but it is the efforts of the other receivers like Smith that have given the Giants the ability to move on even with the prospect of losing Burress.

Burress was recently charged because of an incident where he accidentally shot himself in a Manhattan nightclub. Although Burress had a concealed weapon permit previously in Florida, the permit had expired and New York does not recognize permits from other states. This is just one of many incidents involving Burress this season. Quarterback Eli Manning has shown that the Giants can get it done without Burress, spreading the ball around to his many receivers to make big plays.
