How To Power Your Home With Wind Energy

The time is now for us to actively conserve our energy consumption. The world is in a terrible condition as a result of the energy crisis. Therefore, we should be open to using alternative energy to power our homes such as wind energy. This is the time where everyone can save the planet.

Everyone can begin adopting cost-effective and pollution free alternative energy sources. The environment can become cleaner without compromising on our daily energy requirements with the right use of these alternative sources.

To power your home with wind energy, for the best results, experts recommend that your home should be on a plot of land that is at least one acre. This will give the wind the amount of space needed to gain speed. Also, constant wind will generate more electricity, with the ideal wind speed for an electrical charge at 11mph.

Powering your home with wind energy is accomplished through kinetic energy that is generated by the wind. The best advantage is that it does not require any modifications to your home in order to be effective.

You will save a lot of money on your electric bill, anywhere from 5%-90%.

You will need to install wind turbines on top of your home, or on a nearby building in order to have this wind power generation system. Nothing needs to change on your home for installation. This includes the wiring.

A turbine is mounted to a tower that is driven by the wind energy. The height of the tower will vary, depending upon the wind speed in the area where you live. The lower the wind speed, the higher the tower will need to be. Windy regions require shorter towers.

The good thing is that various house appliances can be used in the home with the electrical energy that is generated by the wind power system.

You can store the electricity that is generated for use later. Also, you can sell some of the power to power companies for a profit. This is more common in areas that have lots of wind where lots of energy is stored up.

Combining the wind energy in your home with solar power systems could eventually free you from having a power bill.

Powering your home with wind energy is not a complicated process. All you need is to make up your mind that you want to begin using these alternative energy sources.

How to Keep the Green in your Holiday Celebrations

It is possible to be green and save a little green this season full of celebrations. The holidays can be a time of excess, but it’s important to remember that holiday extravagance can have long-term effects on the environment (and your wallet). With minimum effort and a little less fuss this season you can be good to the environment and your bottom line.

A quick tour through the internet can garner plenty of information about the consumer impact on the environment. This time of year people are shopping more, driving more, mailing more and spending more money. Here are some less than festive facts:

* Americans use over 380 billion plastic (polyethylene) bags per year.
* Americans throw away approximately 100 billion polyethylene bags per year.
* It takes 1000 years for polyethylene bags to break down.
* Plastic bags do not biodegrade, they photodegrade, which means they slowly break down into smaller and smaller bits that can contaminate soil and waterways.
* In 2007, the amount of paper recovered for recycling averaged 360 pounds for every person in the United States.
* Each American sends about 300 pounds of packaging to the landfill every year.
* Each year, Americans throw out almost 180,000 tons of batteries.
* Batteries are comprised of heavy metals, which include nickel cadmium, alkaline, mercury, nickel metal hydride and lead acid. These can threaten our environment if not properly discarded or handled.
* Many toys are made with Polyvinyl Chloride, or PVC #3 plastic, which is often difficult to recycle.

A good way to save money, time and gas is to sit down and make a list of everyone you plan to give gifts to this season. Be realistic about your budget and time by setting a budget and a time frame for holiday spending. Knowing exactly how much you can spend and that you will have it all done by a certain date can cut down on the stress of the season.

Once you have a budget and list, do a little research. Look at the sales fliers in the paper and search websites for the best prices. Make a plan of what you can buy online and what can be purchased in one-stop shopping trips to the mall or shopping centers. These tips work for food shopping as well. Make a budget for special holiday cooking and make lists of what you’ll need. The key to making this work is sticking to the budget and following your list. Of course, remember to bring reusable cloth bags when shopping.

Recycling doesn’t just have to mean your plastic, glass and paper. Try shopping children’s resale shops for toys and games. Often you can find barely used or even brand new items. It can also be a good way to make a little extra money, too, by recycling gently used toys, games and clothes.

Consider that perhaps a special outing can be more meaningful than a present and is certainly something that comes with less packaging. Be creative with gift wrapping by using cloth bags, hand decorated paper bags for wrapping paper, or even make part of the gift the wrapping.

Also, batteries can be a safety hazard as well as an environmental hazard. It might be a good idea for the well being of your little one to skip the loud electronic toy (It may be good for your well being, too). When it comes to the must-have electronics for older kids, try to use rechargeable batteries.

For mailing gifts out of town, reuse material like boxes, bubble wrap, and peanuts. Plan ahead so that you can ship things by land instead of express mail by air, which not only costs more but uses more fuel.
Turn decorative lights off during the day and at bedtime to save energy. After the holidays, recycle your Christmas tree. The program at Zilker Park is so easy you don’t even have to get out of your car. They use the trees for mulch, so your holiday spirit is recycled into the New Year.

Recognizing and Conquering Termite Problems

Termites scare people. They understand that these creatures could bring great havoc to their home and property if given the chance to do so. Once termites inhabit a home, it becomes susceptible to ruin. It becomes a dangerous place to live in and a difficult one to market. This is perhaps the reason why termites have become a fearful enemy of homeowners. Their invasion is a quiet one. We do know of their existence and how menacing termites could be. What we may not be familiar with are the details of their existence in order to be able to understand them and to succeed in keeping them away from one’s home.

They live like ants, and they are also known as white ants. They live together, hordes of them, in what we call colonies. They survive mostly on the likes of dead leaves, wood, or damp soil. A single colony can wreak havoc to any structure, like homes and buildings, even to forests and crops.

At a glance, they most likely look like ants that are white in color, hence the name white ants. It also has several other features similar to the ants, such as physical appearance, social movements, and size. But at a closer look, termites, compared to ants, are obviously lighter in color. They are also fatter, softer in texture, and with tinier legs and move more slowly than ants. They, in fact, have features which make them more similar to cockroaches rather than ants. A number of experts prefer that they be classified separately rather than being included in the Hymenoptera class in which ants belong.

The regular termites posses a large mouth structure intended for biting. They are essentially small; their size do not reach over one centimeter long. They dwell in dark burrows, stay together in colonies, and rarely go out outside of their dwelling. The few occasions when they go out include the departure of winged alates, or baby termites, in large numbers, who leave their colony to look for other areas to serve as their new nests. Another instance is when the termites that feed on grass or litter hunt for food. They also go out when they build a shelter.

Living in colonies is what they have in common with ants. They live together, also like ants, which is why they are considered social insects. Your regular termite colony may have a few hundred to as many as a million termites. They work together to hunt for food in order to survive.

Their organization is composed of three levels, the reproductives to which their queen belongs, then the workers whose task is to forage for food and feed the colony, and the soldiers with their strength and armour, protecting the colony from the attacks of ants.

Even if termites frighten people, their onslaught can be controlled, if not prevented, in homes and other structures. Find the time to study them, and the indications that they have probably come to your place. They could be overcome, thereby preventing tremendous destruction to your property. There are established methods of controlling them. The earlier the detection, the less serious the damage termites can bring.

Many people ask: what does a termite look like? For a simple answer, termites appear like small white colored ants. However, there are important differences. Termite pictures can help you learn what these pests look like so you can combat them quickly.

Be Environment Friendly While Doing Water Damage Restoration

As we are now living in an enlightened era of environmental health, it is clear that proper water damage restoration is imperative. Water damage restoration should be more than extraction of water from the carpet and pad. Controlling and terminating the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew should be the primary concern. In terms of the interior building temperature, it is important to note that mildew and molds cannot live under the temperature of 75 degrees. Water damage restoration must be performed by trained technicians who understand proper procedures and chemical applications. A responsible water damage restoration service will use an effective mold killer but should be environment friendly as well. Responsible personnel will provide the necessary adjustments to the environment by altering temperature and humidity levels to deter production of mold, mildew and bacteria.

Water-damaged building interiors provide the primary environment for the growth and reproduction of mildew and bacteria. They are parasitic, meaning they rely on dead or decaying organic matter for food. One of the favorite foods for bacteria and mildew is the decaying organic jute backing of carpets which we cannot see. When coupled with warm humid air it creates the ideal environment for reproduction. Mold and mildew may cause allergic reactions and health problems such as depression, arthritis, puffy eyes, chronic cough, rheumatism, asthma or headache.

During water damage restoration, the mold and mildew problem should be addressed immediately before they grow. Picking a company that knows alternative ways of preventing molds other than application of chemicals will help lessen the strain that the environment is suffering right now. Alternative way of preventing mold is through effective and complete drying during water damage restoration. Once the area is completely dried out, you may never need to apply chemicals to prevent growth. The use of dehumidification is also a natural way of preventing molds without the use of chemicals. It is done by heating and cooling the place to bring back its normal humidity level where molds cannot thrive.

The excess water from water damage restoration should be disposed properly, especially if the water came from floods. These waters are considered as black water and may be contaminated with bacteria, viruses and hazardous chemicals. This should be disposed properly to help preserve the environment. These are simple things that we usually forget during water damage restoration. We are busy restoring our homes or buildings but we often forgot our responsibility to our environment.

Be Aware Of The Bears When You’re Outdoors

One of the worlds largest predators that live on land is the polar bear. Polar bears have white fur and live in the Arctic Ocean. Polar bears are believed to be closely related to brown bears except polar bears have characteristics that help them adapt to the cold weather they live in. Their unique characteristics help them to easily move across ice, snow, and even swim. Their main source of food while living in the frozen sea is seal.

These mammals are primarily born on land and then move towards the frozen sea later for most of the year. These animals are also very huge. The males can range from eight hundred and eighty to one thousand five hundred pounds while the females weigh about half of that. They are also about eight to nine feet long! Polar bears have so much blubber on them to keep warm in the arctic weather that they will over heat at ten degrees Celsius or fifty degrees Fahrenheit.

To detect their prey they have a great sense of smell. They could smell a seal from a mile away. And not just a mile away but also the seal could be buried under three feet of snow and they could still smell the seal a mile away. It is amazing at how well they can smell something. They also have very good hearing and vision. Another unique thing that allows them to live in the conditions they do is swimming in the ice-cold sea. With all their blubber they can keep warm and it aids them in staying afloat.

These mammals have been known to be the marine mammals and they can swim up to six miles per hour. Like their other bears they do hibernate but only during a few months during the seasons they cannot hunt otherwise these animals are always active. It is thought that polar bears are aggressive and vicious but in reality they are not. They actually are not territorial at all and rather than fight during a confrontation they run.

They also do not attack humans unless one is irritating them or provoking them, but they are known to kill and sometimes eat a human if they are hungry. These animals are one of a kind and very interesting. Many people like them for their uniqueness and their pure white fur coat. This fur coat though can yellow with age and if they are kept in captivity their white coat turns into a green color due to the algae in their hair.

How Do Hybrid Cars Work?

Webster’s Dictionary defines a “hybrid” as something derived from heterogeneous sources, or composed of elements of different or incongruous kinds: a hybrid of the academic and business worlds for example. But, how does a hybrid automobile actually work? What is it that takes place while driving that can give you 20 or 30 more miles per gallon than the standard automobile?

Considering the definition above, a hybrid powered vehicle is a vehicle that is composed of two or more different and/or incongruous kinds of propulsion. In this way a hybrid powered vehicle is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources to propel the vehicle. They operate by combining an electricity-run motor, a gasoline engine and maximum-powered batteries. These batteries provide energy for the electric motor and recharge when they recapture the energy that is usually lost when the car is decelerating or while coasting.

Regenerative breaking is the term for this process. In specific driving instances, the energy coming from the gas engine can also charge the battery simultaneously. Because of this, there is no need to plug in hybrid cars. Although hybrid powered vehicles have smaller engines than most conventional cars, an extra boost of horsepower comes from the electric motor. Therefore, hybrid cars rely less on the gasoline engine and as a result provide increased fuel economy and lower air pollution. HEVs also convert energy normally wasted when the car coasts or brakes into electricity that gets stored in the battery until utilized by the electric motor.

For our purposes, let’s classify hybrid cars into two categories to better understand how the battery functions and how the gas engine and the electric motor work when put together. There are two kinds of hybrids: the mild hybrids and the full hybrids. Each of these kinds have different approaches when combining the three components.

Mild Hybrid Cars and How They Work

In this type of hybrid car, the electric motor is only an assistant when it comes to operating the main propulsion. The electric motor provides additional power to assist the gas engine in accelerating, passing, or hill climbing. This allows a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine to be used. It is the gas engine, however that provides the major energy needed.

The motor depends on the gas engine to be able to operate. The electric motor is capable of eating up electricity from the batteries, or it can come up with energy for it, but the electric motor cannot do these functions at the same time. This type of sytem is used in two of Honda’s hybrid models, the Insight and the Civic hybrid.

Full Hybrid Cars Work and How They Work

The distinction of the full hybrid from the mild variety is that the electric motor and the gas engine can operate on its own. In most instances, the electric motor can function by itself in low speed, and once it picks up, the gasoline engine automatically takes over. Both the electric motor and the gas engine can function as a team, so to speak, if the car is in hard acceleration.

This combined effort provides a hybrid powered car the power that it requires for each different situation. Full hybrid cars can consume and build up electricity simultaneously. The full hybrid setup can be found in models such as the popular Toyota Prius, the Mercury Mariner Hybrid, and the Escape hybrid from Ford.

For example, you can look at the way the Toyota Prius works. The Prius runs on a technology called the Hybrid Synergy Drive, which involves a power split device to combine the energy of the electric motor and the gas engine. This technology, known as HSD, enables an effortless switching of power sources that the car’s driver would not notice during normal driving situations.

Unlike the other mild hybrid types, the Prius can be operated by the electric motor alone powered by the battery pack. As a result, a motorist can drive silently for short amounts of time. The Honda hybrids on this level cannot function just by the electric motor.

While speeding up a highway, the Prius utilizes the gas engine as its main operator, and can get assistance from the generator if needed. Then this hybrid car shuts off the gas engine automatically during stops. This contributes greatly in mileage improvement and produces less emission.

To sum up, the main goal of hybrid powered cars are to provide options for economy and efficiency amid the growing need for better forms of transport. Environmentally-conscious individuals would find heaven with hybrid cars. However, since they are just being introduced in the market, they can come at quite an expense. With increased sales numbers, it is hoped that more hybrid cars will become accessible to everyone in the future.

An Earth-Friendly Mold Removal Method

There are plenty of mold removal companies listed in the phonebook and online. These companies use different methods of mold removal but the most common method used is using chemicals to kill the molds. There are various types of chemicals used in this process. Some of them are not exactly earth-friendly or safe to human health. This is why some chemicals used by some mold removal companies are not allowed in certain states.

One technology used in mold removal that is guaranteed safe for the environment and human health is the use of heat. One company uses the patented technology called Thermapureheat. Thermapureheat raises the temperature in areas of the home affected by molds to kill the molds. The process is clean and odorless and can kill not just molds but also bed bugs, dust mites, bacteria and other microorganisms. The reason this process if earth-friendly is because it does not use chemicals that are harmful to the environment.

Using heat to kill bacteria and other microorganisms is not entirely a new concept. Using heat to kill microorganisms has been around for a long time and is the same concept discovered by Louis Pasteur in the 1860s.

Different types of molds and other microorganisms die at specific temperatures and specific length of exposure to the temperature. There are molds that die at 140 degrees Fahrenheit. There are molds that die between 145 degrees Fahrenheit and 150 Fahrenheit. Wood fungi die at 151 degrees Fahrenheit. Other organisms that can die from heat are viruses like E.Coli, Anthrax, Smallpox and other hazardous bacteria. Thermapureheat can also be used to kill flour beetle, adult German cockroach, dry wood termite nymphs and argentine ants. The technicians will evaluate the types of molds and microorganisms present in your home and apply the necessary heat at the duration by which the specific temperature should be applied.

This mold removal method is not just used during water damage restoration but can also be used to treat whole structures such as hotels, school buildings and other infrastructures where there may be hidden mold and microorganisms.

The process allows the contractor to kill microorganisms without the need to remove furnishings and other items from the room/building. This can definitely save homeowners and building administrators time and money. The method is considered as pasteurization of buildings and is one of the safest methods for mold removal. The best thing about this mold removal technology is how homeowners, tenants, and guests can use the room/building right after the procedure. There is no need to wait for mold removal chemicals to dissipate.

Solar Power For Your Home

The 2008 Presidential campaign brought to the forefront the issue of global warming, alternative energy sources and renewable energy. The American people became familiar with words and phrases such as solar power, green collar jobs and wind turbine.

Even if we do not know the exact definition of these words, we know that they are all related to improving our air quality, eliminating our dependence on foreign oil and preparing us to effectively compete in the 21st Century.

Now more than ever, it is possible to get alternative sources of energy such as solar power or wind energy, in order for you to have a more energy efficient home.

The use of solar power is safe because it is a clean and reliable source of renewable energy that is generated by converting the sun’s radiation into electricity.

The initial setup for solar cells is not cheap, but you can use them in conjunction with the existing source of power that you have in your home. The basic setup is easy, and can get you on the right track of improving your carbon footprint.

Solar Power for Home - Required Steps

The first step to setup your home for solar power is to complete an estimate of the daily, monthly and yearly power consumption in your home. This information is available on your electric bills.

Next, you can build a power supply system that is capable of handling your needs, with an additional 30% cushion. Once this is completed, purchase photovoltaic solar panels. You can find a variety on the market such as solar shingles, roll out solar sheets and solar panels.

The panels you purchase can be secured to the roof by using a rail mounting system that comes with the panels. The panels can either be flush mounted or tilted up in order to accommodate the slope of your roof.

The direction is not as important as ensuring there is no shade on the roof. The use of solar power for home, how to power your home with wind energy is a do-it-yourself process.

Since initially you will use a combination of solar and grid power, you will not need a battery bank to store power for night use. To best utilize the grid power, run washing machines and dryers at night.

To convert the solar energy into the type of energy that your home can use, you will need a power inverter. The inverter must be replaced after 15 years of use.

Going Green: Organic Mold Removal Products

Green is the new trend lately and it has moved to mold removal cleaning products as well. Mold, a type of fungi grows in humid places and is becoming a common household problem. Since mold is toxic, effective and strong biocide formulas are often used to remove them. However, these biocides can be harsh to health, environment and mold infested surfaces. For one, using them can result to discoloration in fabrics. Second, most biocides can cause intoxication. Using bleach for instance, requires that one wears a mask and the room be well ventilated. Bleach also does not go well with other biocides such as ammonia or else even more harmful fumes may form. Lastly, bleach cannot be used on fabrics such as carpets or discoloration may result.

Fortunately, organic cleaning products make up for what the usual biocides lack. An organic solution usually takes care of both stain and odor - the two most hard to remove properties of mold. Black mold, a very toxic type of mold, leaves a stain on the surface it grows on. The stain can be very hard to remove that a common solution has been to use huge amounts of bleach. Eventually, intoxication and surface damage results before all the stain can be removed. Organic mold removal products have the same powerful mold removal effect of bleach yet without the harmful smell and adverse effects on surfaces. They can even be used on carpets and not cause discoloration.

Since organic products come from natural ingredients, most of them are safe to use without protective gear. They are not harmful to the skin and neither when inhaled. But since they are used to remove toxic mold, protective gloves are still needed. Wearing protective clothing is extremely important in removing mold; skin contact and inhalation can be very dangerous.

The best thing to using organic mold removal products is that it prevents mold from coming back. Usual mold removal products are only concerned with cleaning mold infested surfaces and avoiding future mold growth is the job of the homeowner. Organic mold removal products usually come in a set: one mold removal formula and one shield formula. The later type is usually sprayed on a previously mold infested area to act as a shield so no mold or mildew ever grows on them.

Removing mold can also be successfully done with the use of organic and environment friendly products. They work just as well as the usual cleaning products but without the harmful effects to health, environment and surface materials. Since organic mold removal products are made from natural ingredients, there won’t be any harmful wastes after they are used. You not only clean out molds, you also protect the environment.

Using green products is actually a good way to save the environment. But the best thing you can benefit from them is that they are completely safe to use. However, molds are still toxic no matter what type of cleaning products you use. Do-it-yourself cleaning products are there to assist and a successful mold removal still depends on one’s capabilities. If you think you are incapable of removing mold, it will be best to leave it to professionals.

Environmental And Health Benefits Of Green Mold Removal Products

Molds reproduce asexually. They need the right conditions, though, such as moisture, to breed. If left unattended to, molds can grow with a snowball effect. Other than they make such an unpleasant sight, molds are a serious threat to human health. They can pollute the air you breathe in and cause various respiratory reactions when inhaled.

Molds should be removed right away to free your home of various mold-related threats. Fortunately, fighting molds today is much easier because there are various technologies and products specifically designed against them. However, commercial mold removal products are heavy with chemicals that are harmful to the environment and can threaten health of your kids and your pets.

Green mold removal products, on the other hand, are made of organic materials that are toxic to molds but not to humans or pets. They have been found to contain little amount of toxins or none at all. Nevertheless, they deliver the same effectiveness as commercial cleaning products. Green mold removal products work by killing and breaking down molds at the root or DNA level so they don’t come back again and again.

Basically, there are five reasons why you should go green when it comes to fighting molds.

1. Cleaning with green mold removal products is proven to be safe way to eliminate molds. Since green cleaning involves use of toxin-free chemicals, it does not pose any threat to good health of your family.

2. Commercial, non-organic products contain harsh chemicals including benzene and formalin. These chemicals have been found to be the most common sources of allergic reactions at home. They are also found to be carcinogenic. That is, when accumulated by the body over a long time, they can cause development of certain types of cancer. These chemicals have been found also to reduce the body’s resistance and immunity to certain diseases in the long run.

Green mold removal products, on the other hand, contain no such chemicals so your family’s health is safeguarded.

3. Because they contain no chemicals and their making produces no industrial wastes, green mold removal products are also considered safe for the environment. No wonder they are called eco-friendly.

4. Commercial cleaning products also contain chemicals that can trigger asthma in kids. Thus, it is quite ironic if you’d use commercial cleaning products to remove allergy-causing molds. If you have kids who have asthma, safeguard them both from molds and from harsh chemicals by using green mold removal products.

5. Natural mold removers are easy to find. Just look for “National Organic Program” label on the container so you’d know which products have passed the “green” test. They are also easy on the pocket. You can even make your own green cleaning product such as by mixing tea tree oil and water.

Eliminating visible mold growths is just half of the battle in mold removal. Look around for dank and shady areas in your home. Dark places where no sunlight and enough fresh air are the likely spots for mold growth. Let in fresh air and sunlight into the area now and then to inhibit mold growth. The best way to safeguard the environment is to prevent molds from growing in the first place.
